Match Corps School Program- Recruiting College Seniors

Colin Bottles

Director of Recruiting

MATCH Corps

http://matchschool.org

______________________________________________________________________

The mission of the MATCH Corps is clear: success in college and beyond for our students.  Most of the students we serve come from low-income families, are Black or Latino, have about a 1 in 20 chance of graduating from college, and enter MATCH significantly behind grade level.  Each tutor’s job is nothing less than to change the arc of his/her students’ lives.

The MATCH Corps program began in 2004 and is the first of its kind in the nation. The Corps is a group of 90 top recent college graduates who work one-on-one with six to eight MATCH High School or Middle School students each day for an entire academic year. Corps members live together in apartments nearby the Middle School and in a dorm on the top floor of the High School. Both schools are award-winning open-admission Charter Public High Schools in Boston, MA. This full-time service year program is designed to fully close the academic Achievement Gap between minority students and their non-minority peers, one student at a time. Each Corps member works to guarantee the academic success of MATCH students while building personal relationships. Corps members also undertake secondary projects such as serving as teaching assistants, and may also coach teams and power extracurricular programs.

We also offer an optional teacher training program called MATCH Teacher Residency. In MTR, Corps members receive additional training on the weekends with the aim of becoming unusually effective first year teachers in high-poverty schools. Graduates of MTR go on to teach at some of the most highly regarded charter schools in the country and tend to outperform other rookie teachers in the classroom.

The highly-selective MATCH Corps allows idealistic and dedicated young people to invest their time and energy in depth over breadth, focusing their attention on a few students and their needs and goals. MATCH Corps is not necessarily looking for the future teachers of America. We want future doctors, lawyers, MBAs, architects; we want majors from math, political science, literature, economics, engineering — anyone willing to work tirelessly for one year to erase, not narrow, the Achievement Gap. Corps members who know they want to teach for at least two years in a high-poverty charter school should opt in to MATCH Teacher Residency (see above).

MATCH has received much recognition since it opened its doors in the fall of 2000 for its rigorous, innovative approach to urban education. In 2010, MATCH was named one of the 100 best high schools in the nation by Newsweek, was awarded silver medal status by US News and World Report, and was mentioned in editorials in the New York Times and the Washington Post.

The internship is preferably for 3 credits, though a 2-credit internship is possible. The Disney College Program Campus Representatives of the University of Pittsburgh invite you to join us for our Spring 2011 campus presentation. The Disney College Program recruits a number of Pitt students every year for a semester-long paid internship in Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida and Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA. The Disney College Program interns learn a wide range of transferable skills, have the option to take free classes, network with Disney leaders and experience an internship like no other… and all at one of the most prominent companies in the world!

While the internship is an amazing opportunity for accepted students, we understand there is not much knowledge University-wide of the specifics of the program. That is why we would like you to join us for our campus presentation on October 19th at 5pm or October 20th at 6pm. Both presentations will be held in the William Pitt Union Ballroom. This presentation will give you some details of the program that are integral to know in case you have interested students, or students whom you believe would benefit from the program. Disney recruiter Melissa Goehring will be presenting and available for any questions. Pitt students who have completed and returned from the program will also be there.

This is a great opportunity to learn about a popular program! We hope to see you there!

Brig Niagara – Summer 2011

An experiential learning experience based on the maritime history of the Great Lakes and the historic Brig Niagara.  The Niagara is a replica of the 1813 square rigged sailing warship which fought at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812 (USCG inspected as a Sailing School Vessel).  A three week program provides an immersive experience in the life and work of a seaman in the Age of Sail, which offers lessons in seamanship, history, and citizenship.  Through living onboard and sailing under the tutelage of the professional crew, as well as history faculty, students acquire a much deeper understanding of maritime history and the seafaring culture through living many of the same challenges and conditions faced by seafarers of the past.  By becoming their own first person document, students acquire a filter for analyzing voyage narratives and other first person accounts.  By sharing life and work in the tight confines of a ship at sea students learn that the greatest resource they have onboard is each other, and that they have a responsibility to do each task correctly for the safety of all onboard.  By accepting the challenges posed students typically achieve a greater respect for themselves, their shipmates, and the marine environment.

We will be doing information on this in the Spring time.  But, there is information in the folder on the right hand side.
